Go Canoeing Tours
What is it?
Fancy a guided trip along the River Soar? See a bit of Leicestershire from a different perspective by traveling along the canal ways paddling your own boat. We have two different tours to choose from, each with a different theme and suited for different skills levels.
You will be given a qualified leader who will supply you with any kit you need and teach you any skills that will help you in your journey. The leader will also be able to talk to you about the river and the sites as you paddle along the river.
Please be aware due to the nature of the activity these times can change. Tours have been known to overrun due to unforeseen circumstances.

River Soar Pub Paddle
Perfect for someone wanting to take a leisurely paddle down for a drink, or even a pub lunch before paddling back.
From Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre paddle down the river past Watermead Park, taking time to look out for the various birds and wildlife along the way. Arriving in Birstall at the White Horse Pub. Stopping here participants can either have a drink or meal as pre-arranged, sitting in either their beautiful pub garden or the comfort inside. Once finished we then paddle back up to the Centre. Please note you may need to book tables in advanced as the White Horse can be very busy.
This tour is approximately 2.4 miles. It can take half a day depending on how quick people paddle and how long they want to stay at the pub. It is advisable to have had a previous experience in a canoe, the leader can support weaker paddlers through the trip if needed.
Leicester Urban Paddle
A great tour for people wanting to see a bit of Leicester and maybe paddle down some exciting weirs.
A minibus will take you up to the start of the tour at Riverside Park (Aylestone Meadows). From there we will paddle down the river eventually arriving and your first city landmark Leicester City Football Stadium. Here is the biggest weir of the trip – paddle it if you dare!! Or you can get out and walk around on the left. Carry on along the Mile Straight on to Frog Island where you meet the next weir. The river carries on to Abbey Park, (Abbey Park Weir), here you can stop for a break if there is time, there are toilets and a café. Then on to the Space Centre and Abbey Pumping Station where you have the final smallest weir. Carry on another kilometer to finish back at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre. All weirs can be portaged if you don’t want to run them.
Down River Day Tour
Paddle along Leicestershire’s River Soar out of Leicester and through some of the villages to Sileby Mill.
The tour starts at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre where we can kit you up with the right boat, paddle and buoyancy aid. The trip will take you down the river to Birstal, then on to Thurmaston, and then out of the city towards Cossington. The tour then carries on through Leicestershire countryside finishing at Sileby Mill.
Paddlers can hope to see local wildlife such as ducks, swans, geese, coots, moor hens, and even maybe the odd heron. The more adventurous participants can have a go at features such as Birstal Drop Weir or ride along the long sloping weir at Cossington, (participants are advised to check the appropriate instructor is leading the tour to run the weirs).
The paddle is approximately 6.5 miles long. It generally should take about 4 hours to complete, but participants are advised to allow time for delays and time for loading boats on to the trailer and driving back to the centre
KataKanu Treasure Hunt
This year we will be hosting a new fun activity you can do on the river with the family. As part of Go Canoeing Week we are hosting a KataKanu Treasure Hunt.
Participants will be looked after by an instructor as we paddle along the river looking for clues that will lead you to the secretly hidden treasure.
We will set the group into two teams, (maximum of 6 people), in a KataKanu each. The teams will be then given a clue that will start them off. Each clue leads to another until they find their hidden treasure. Minimum age for this is 5 years old as we are in KataKanus.
Please note sometimes tours do not allow participants to run weirs if we do not have the appropriate qualified instructor running them. Please enquire if this is important.
Canoes, paddles, buoyancy aids and waterproofs are available without cost if required. You are more than welcome to use any of your own kit as you wish if the Tour Leader deems it suitable and safe to do so.
Free car parking is available on site and is without height restriction
Changing, shower and toilet facilities are available on site.
