BCU Bellboat Helm Award

What is it?
A bell boat is a twinned hull very large and stable open canoe. It can have up to 14 children or 8 adults all working as a team to paddle it. Bell boating is fun way to introduce to people to paddle sport that has many uses including:
- fun and games
- outdoor education
- expeditions
- competition
- training
- first boating experiences
The helm award is aimed at coaches, youth leaders, teachers or anyone wishing to introduce or develop paddlers on a placid water environment. The course covers:
- use of safety kit
- steering the bell boat
- rescues
- games and activities
- uses of the bell boat
- a brief history of bell boating
- safe use of a lock
- educational aspects
We work on a ratio of 1:8 students in order to maximise the learning experience, giving people a crew to work with as well as plenty of helming time.
Pre-requisites
Candidate does not need a first aid qualification to attend the course, but they will need one to gain their certification. They need to be aged 18+ however 16 year olds can do the course and become a trainee bell boat helm.
