BCU 3 Star Open Canoe Assessment

What is it?
This is an assessment where the candidate has the opportunity to gain the Open Canoe 3 Star Award. Candidates will be expected throughout the course to demonstrate all the necessary skills required to fulfill the award, including:
- Crossing the flow on the river
- Maneuvering in and out of eddies
- Poling
- Sailing,
- Towing
- Reverse figure of eight,
- Improve all strokes to an intermediate standard
The course will be split up into a session at LOPC covering all the flat water skills then a river trip offsite, where there are grade two rapids. It will be on the River Derwent ending on the at Matlock rapids. If you require help with transport we can organise a car sharing system to help.
Basic equipment such as boats, paddles and buoyancy aids can be provided, however please inform us prior to the assessment should you need them
The 3 star award is a pre-requisite to becoming a L2 Coach
Pre-requisites
Candidates must show evidence of having paddled at least 3 journeys in open canoe of about 3 hours duration (10km), each with at least one of these in an open water environment. Candidate should also either have the two star award or provide evidence having attended at least one session of about 3 hours long in an alternative discipline. Minimum age 14.
