Introduction to White Water (kayak)

What is it?
This is a one day course introducing you to the skills and paddle strokes necessary to paddle on white water. The course will be based on the River Derwent in the Peak District, ideal for a gentle introduction to paddling on moving water.
This section of water is ideal to learn as we can introduce the skills in areas where the water is moving more gently and as the journey progresses apply those skills to more challenging sections of the river. Skill include:
- Learning to ferry glide
- Breaking in and out of the flow
- Adjusting to different speeds of current
- Timing paddle stokes effectively
- Planning out routes to get from one eddy to another
- Using the power of the water
- Introduction to surfing waves
This course is run on ratio of 1:4, giving you plenty of personal coaching time to learn about how you’re paddling is progressing on to a moving water environment.
Who’s it for?
This is for anyone aged 14 or over and wants to take their paddling on to a white water environment. It is most suitable for someone who has learned all the basic paddle strokes and feels confident paddling on flat water.
LOPC can supply a kayak, paddle, pfd, spraydeck or helmet. However notice must be given so we can make the necessary arrangements.
50% deposit required to secure a place together with a completed registration form.
