Course Details
This course is aimed to provide the skills and techniques used to be safe on white water. The course covers the personal survival skills, basic throw line techniques and an understanding of how to deal with an emergency situation with the correct priorities and protocols. The course is very much hands on, teaching practical skills on the river including:
- Safe paddling strategies
- Recovery of a swimmer
- Shouting rescue
- Reaching rescue
- Throw line
- Boat based rescue
- Live bait rescue
- Knots
- Entrapment rescue
- Shallow water wading techniques
- Recovery of equipment
- Scenarios
Although recommended you do not need to bring any specialist kit as the course will look into the various attributes to consider when choosing to buy such kit. All you will need is suitable personal clothing for spending a lot of time in the water.
The course will be at two locations, the Holme Pierpoint and the white water rapids at Matlock.
Pre-requisites
Candidate needs to be a minimum age of 16 and confident in swimming in normal canoe clothing on grade 2 water.
Payment required to secure a place, together with completed registration form. Further to the courses fees candidates will be expected to pay a registration fee, which is paid to the BCU. This is £5 for BCU members or £10 for non members. See booking terms and conditions for more details.
