The Helm Award is aimed at coaches, youth leaders, teachers or anyone wishing to introduce or develop paddlers on a placid water environment.
When is it?
Currently no planned dates, Please call for further details and register your interest. We need a minimum of 4 people to run this course so if you have a group we can put on a course just for you!
Maximum group size
This course requires no previous experience, but it is expected that the candidates have an interest in working with groups in the outdoors. Candidates do not need a first aid qualification to attend the course, but they will need one to gain their certification - minimum of 8 hour course. You need to be aged at least 18 to be a Helm, however 16 & 17 year olds can do the course and become a Trainee Bell Boat Helm.
As well as the cost for the course, there is also a fee charged by British Canoeing. This is £22 for BC members and £35 for non members. We will collect this from candidates upon successful completion of the course, and pay it to British Canoeing when we log the course for certification.
The course covers:
* use of safety kit
* steering the bell boat
* games and activities
* uses of the Bell Boat
* a brief history of Bell Boating
* safe use of a lock
* educational aspects
We work on a ratio of 1:8 students in order to maximise the learning experience, giving people a crew to work with as well as plenty of helming time.
